Observes that despite (or due to) the grave economic conditions in Spain in the 17th c., the people availed themselves of every pretext for amusements, especially religious feasts and secular spectacles. As an example, studies the fiestas held in Jaén: bullfights; the feast of Corpus Christi and the jousting games, masquerades, and dances associated with it; and Carnival.
