Abstract
(en)
Study of the farra do boi, a traditional feast in the coastal region of Santa Catarina (Brazil), in which the sport of "playing with the ox" is followed by the slaughter of the animal and a banquet at which he is consumed. Notes recent efforts to abolish the festivity, and relates this to the class and power structure as well as the pressures of modern life. Also examines the symbolism of the ox and the social significance of the feast. Compares Portuguese traditions of bull-fighting and festivities involving oxen, especially in the Azores.
