Study of an early 17th c. astrolabe of a rare type (private collection), here described as a hanging quadrant, recovered recently from the Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de Atocha, wrecked off Key West in 1622. Observes that although the instrument at first appeared to be unique, the type appears in Portuguese illustrated books on navigation, 16th-18th cs.; and draws attention to an 18th c. example in the collection of the University of Coimbra
