Biography and catalogue of works of the Cincinnati landscape and portrait painter; includes chapters on his relationship to the Ohio River Valley landscape tradition, his mural paintings for Nicholas Longworth (Cincinnati, Taft Museum), his experiences in Europe and Canada, and his major work, Land of the Lotus Eaters, 1861 (Swedish royal collections); also discusses his situation as a black artist in American society before and during the Civil War, and surveys abolitionist patronage of African-American artists, including Duncanson.
