Abstract (en)
The importance of Marguerite de Navarre's support for French Evangelical Reform is only overshadowed by her fame as a poet. Concentrating on the context of the Reformation movement, this article studies L'Initiatoire instruction en la religion Chrestienne pour les enffans, a richly illuminated manuscript made for Marguerite ca.1530 [Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, MS 5096]. As elaborate as any court manuscript of the French Renaissance, this codex contains an overtly Protestant French catechism and confession written under Marguerite's protection. Part one of the article summarizes the possible origins of the texts, focusing on her confessor Gérard Roussel and the printer Simon Du Bois. Part two examines the still-anonymous full-page miniatures.
