Reviews the section of the 1993 Venice Biennale devoted to emerging artists and new tendencies in art; comments on the problem of interpreting multiculturalism without mystification; cites Nicolas Bourriaud's statement in the catalogue (a special issue of Flash art) that art today no longer claims autonomy but renounces it in order to affect reality by competing within the sphere of communications; and discusses works of various artists in light of these considerations.
