Abstract (en)
Publication accompanying an exhibition of Nolan's series of 27 Ned Kelly paintings, executed 1946-1947 in enamel on composition board. All but one are owned by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. The series depicts the story of legendary Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, and is set in the hill country of northeastern Victoria. In 1961, Nolan stated that the ingredients in the series were "Kelly's own words, and Rousseau, and sunlight," a quotation which Andrew Sayers here takes as the title for an essay on the Ned Kelly paintings and their meaning.
