Study of the collection and patronage of D. Catarina, João III's Spanish Hapsburg queen, based on documents and inventories in the Lisbon archives; includes discussion of the nature of the collection (which included tapestries, portraits, precious objects, jewelry, furniture, and silver, collected over a 50-year period); its European context; collectors and collecting in Portugal in the 16th c.; the wardrobe and treasure of the queen in the Paço da Ribeira in Lisbon; and patterns of Habsburg patronage (condensed from three chapters of the author's doctoral dissertation, Brown University, 1993).
