- Detailed building history, based on documents and plans, of the botanical garden, which was founded by Pombal as an element of the reform of the university (1772), under the directorship of the Italian professor of natural history Domingos Vandelli; lists workmen and payments, 1773-1816; and publishes documents dated 1792-1807. Notes that the rejection of Elsden's project in favor of a design based on Italian models, especially the botanical garden of Padua, was in keeping with Pombal's emphasis on the need for greenhouses that satisfied scientific requirements.
