Analyzes images of Indians in the work of the western painter, active in the first quarter of the 20th c. Shows the impact of the Western movie genre on Russell's iconography and composition, in particular in his 1915 painting When Shadows Hint Death (Pittsburgh, Duquesne Club), and points out the contrast Russell frequently establishes in his works between the old west, represented by Indians, and the new west, embodied in cowboys and in soldiers who battle the Indians. Also indicates that photography, in particular images of Indians defeated in battle, was a source for Russell's paintings.
