An examination of the relationship between material culture and the social construction of gender in later medieval English monasticism through a detailed archaeological case study of medieval women's religious communities. Shows how gender influenced landscape contexts and strategies of economic management, the form and development of buildings and their symbolic and iconographic content. Concludes with an appraisal of the use of gender as an analytical category in the study of medieval monasticism.
