Walmer Castle, which was built 1539-1540 as a coastal fortification, served from 1708 to 1941 as the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, including William Pitt the Younger and the Duke of Wellington. During that period, Walmer was enlarged and furnished, giving it the atmosphere of a small country house. Michael Hall describes efforts undertaken by English Heritage since the 1970s to return the castle as far as possible to its appearance in 1919, while preserving changes made by later Lord Wardens.
