Discusses Henry Hobson Richardson's design of the Sherman House (1874-76) in Newport, Rhode Island. Considers the design a precursor of the Aesthetic Movement. Notes his collaboration on the commission with his protoge, Stanford White, who drew the designs for the interiors of the house. Identifies Joseph Nash's The mansions of England in the olden time (1839-49) as a likely source for some of White's designs. Further notes ways in which Richardson's later designs, e.g. for the Glessner House in Chicago, differ from his earlier work at the Sherman House and anticipate once again a new movement in art and architecture, in this case the Arts and Crafts Movement.
