The tympana with inscriptions decorate the wall of the entry into the church of the Precursor in Amaghou-Noravank'. The church was built in 1221 and given this sculptural decoration sometime early in the 14th c. Over the door appears a seated Hodigitria set against a rich foliate background with two haloed profile busts; one is Isaiah. Both image and inscription refer to the idea of Incarnation. On axis with this tympanum, above a double window, the second contains a bust-length Ancient of Days, with a Crucifixion and a nimbed angel at either side. The images reflect stages in Christian history: Creation; Salvation through Christ's sacrifice; and the Second Coming. Comparisons with late 13th and early 14th c. steles and tympana in Armenia, especially two signed works of Momik, point to the date and probable artist of the tympana. (Stephen R.
