Our notion of the appearance of the Prague Kunstkammer of Emperor Rudolf II was formed by Julius von Schlosser's Die Kunst- und Wunderkammern der Spätrenaissance (Leipzig, 1908): brightly colored and adventurous, a fantastic confusion of the most heterogeneous things. Its original inventory, found in Liechtenstein, leads in many respects to a new view. One of the most important aspects of this is the realization that Rudolf II's activity as a collector must have been systematic and intellectual. (Author)
