Studies phases in the representation of Salome beginning with Heine's Atta Troll, which emphasized the figure of Herodias and introduced the erotic motive. Discusses realism and naturalism: Regnault and Flaubert; Symbolism and decadence: Moreau, Huysmans and Mallarmé; ironic parody: Laforgue, Wilde and Beardsley; and fin de siècle and 20th c. examples: Lévy-Dhurmer, Fabry, Picasso and Apollinaire.
