Political action and "paranoid-critical" analysis : the mother image in Max Lingner and Salvador Dalí

Abstract (en)

Lingner worked as a graphic artist for Henri Barbusse's journal Monde from 1931 to 1935, and most of the images discussed are from this journal. Lingner repeatedly used the motif of mother as a political metaphor and intended it encourage national and international solidarity among broad sections of the populace. In contrast, Dalí's mother imagery probes psychological aspects of motherhood. Held addresses works by Dalí which quote Millet's Angelus.
