Abstract (en)
Examines the exhibition Das endlose Rätsel (Düsseldorf, Kunst Palast, 22 Feb-9 June 2003), commenting on paintings, watercolors, sculptures, and drawings by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and Max Ernst. Focuses on ambiguous works that can appear to be more than one thing, such as Arcimboldo's A Reversible Anthropomorphic Portrait of a Man Composed of Fruit (1580; New York, French & Company) . The works range from the 11th c. to the 20th c.
