Explores the fascination of the male Surrealist artists with the praying mantis. Notes that the two most prominent motifs in their art, metamorphosis and vagina dentata, are represented frequently through the image of the mantis. Associates the mantis image with the ambivalent, if not misogynistic, attitude of the Surrealists towards women. Discusses works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Alberto Giacometti, among others.
