Abstract (en)
Considers Brassaï's "Involuntary sculptures," six photographed sculptures published in the Paris-based surrealist journal Minotaure in December of 1933. Considers the implications of publishing tribal objects and contemporary art together in these inaugural issues, namely how Brassaï's European quotidian objects and their captions (probably by Dalí) exemplify a specifically modernist, primitivist aesthetic response to ethnography.
