Abstract (en)
Uses the troubled relationship between André Breton and Salvador Dalí as a starting point for an analysis of Dalí's relation to politics, money, and the culture industry. Examines both artists' divergent understandings of Hitler and Stalin, fascism and communism, and the Spanish Civil War, and discusses the impact of Dalí's break with the Surrealists on his art and career. Reviews Dalí's artistic and financial successes, and analyzes several of Dalí's later paintings, focusing on Apotheose des Dollars (1965) as the artist's ironic response to the disparaging nickname Breton had given him--Avida Dollars.
