Abstract (en)
Celebrates the return to public view of the intarsia panels and polychromed frieze and ceiling from Federico da Montefeltro's Gubbio studiolo (ca.1478-1482; New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Raggio (pp.4-35) studies the room's cultural context, emphasizing how its ambition and pictorial details reflect Federico's scholarly, military and political achievements. Traces the history of studioli in Italy, with particular attention to Federico's earlier studiolo (1476; Urbino, Palazzo ducale). Posits a new relationship between the Gubbio panels and the paintings of the Liberal Arts by Joos van Wassenhove and Pedro Berruguete (two, London, National Gallery; two, now destroyed, formerly Berlin, Kaiser Friedrich Museum) originally in the room. Asserts that Francesco di Giorgio Martini was the principal designer of the studiolo, with the Florentine workshop of Giuliano and Benedetto da Maiano responsible for the execution of its intarsia. Locates much of the room's effectiveness in its adherence to laws of perspective, emphasized through illusory shadows, and sees there the influence of Piero della Francesca. Wilmering (pp.36-54) recounts the conservation history of the room, discusses its original construction techniques, and elaborates on the methods used by his conservation team as they worked on its elements.
