Accompanies an exhibition of 48 objects drawn from the collection of Edith and Milton Lowenthal, highlighting eight that were recent gifts to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (all 48 reproduced in color with expository entries). Opens with an introductory essay on the Lowenthals as collectors, stressing that the core of their collection was formed of works by Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Abraham Rattner, and Max Weber. An appendix illustrating the 155 American 20th-century works at one time owned by the Lowenthals (most from the 1930s and 1940s, many donated to the Brooklyn Museum, the Butler Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Newark Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, in addition to those at the Metropolitan) completes the homage.
