Abstract (en)

Accompanies an exhibition of the same name that featured Netherlandish and German prints of the 15th and 16th centuries from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. An introductory essay provides a historic overview of the field, emphasizing brief biographies of the artists included in the exhibition; illustrated entries for over 60 objects, including the woodblock for Albrecht Dürer's Samson Rending the Lion and the drawing for Heinrich Aldegrever's Amnon and Jonadab follow. In addition to Dürer and Lucas van Leyden, other artists well represented in the collection include Master ES, Martin Schongauer, Hans Baldung Grien, Barthel Beham, and Albrecht Altdorfer.
