Celebrates the acquisition of the William Rubel Collection of 78 19th-c. photographs and accompanies a selection of the works on exhibition. The essay has the following divisions: "The Rubel collection"; "`A little bit of magic realised': William Henry Fox Talbot and his circle"; "`The pictures are as Rembrandt's but improved': calotypes by David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson"; "`More than mere photographs': the art of Roger Fenton"; "`Men great thro' genius ... women thro' love': portraits by Julia Margaret Cameron"; "`Divine perfection': the daguerreotype in Europe and America"; and "Addition works from the Rubel collection".
