Abstract (en)

Examines Meissonier's role in the founding in 1890 of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, which, it is argued, ended the hegemony of the official Salon and announced the pattern of secession groups that would characterize the development of modern art throughout Europe in the succeeding decades.
