The image of the professional woman artist, as exemplified in such journals as L'Art français, La Famille, and Gazette des femmes, and promoted especially by the Union des femmes peintres et sculpteurs (founded 1881), came to be seen as compatible with traditional values (home, family, patriotism). The concept of "l'art féminin" was inherently conservative and distinct both from the "feminine" art demanded by the critics and from political feminism. Art itself was considered compatible with women's nature and function in society.
