Examines Pollock's reaction to Picasso through a detailed analysis of three works of 1940-41: Bird (New York, Museum of Modern Art), Birth (Lee Krasner collection), and Naked Man (private collection). Picasso presented Pollock with an example of how to explore the variety of meaning in symbolic images. Evidence is adduced from Pollock's Jungian analysis. His interest in the plumed serpent motif, Yoga, the American Indian, and Shamanism are central elements in the transformation which followed his initial exposure to Picasso.
