Discusses the distinction between canonic and monastic architecture in the 12th and 13th cs. focusing on the building type of the refectory. Analyzes the refectory at Easby Abbey in Yorkshire arguing that this and other canons' refectories were conscious reflections of the Coenaculum in Jerusalem. Suggests that the impulse came from England's involvement in the Third Crusade. Includes two appendixes listing locations of relevant refectories.
