Reexamines Cannata's conclusions about the Roman origins of the Renaissance plaquette and its dependence on antique engraved gems, restricting comparison to gems known to have belonged to Pietro Barbo (later Paul II) or Lorenzo de'Medici. Attributes six plaquettes after the antique to the Barbo workshop before 1470, and five to Florence prior to the formation of Lorenzo's collection (ca. 1470). Suggests the existence of other centers of production in Mantua, and possibly elsewhere.
