Surveys the development of the Renaissance plaquette in relation to its function (initially for specific purposes, subsequently "to fascinate and please"). Examines the use of plaquettes as sword pommels in the work of Master IO.F.F., whose monogram appears on 10 known examples. Suggests a Bolognese origin for the master, based on stylistic connections to the Francia workshop.
