The author has accumulated records of 430 Renaissance bindings decorated with 138 plaquettes or medallions. Surveys the use of plaquettes on bookbindings from its nearly simultaneous origins in Italy and Germany in the early 1470s to the mid-16th c., concentrating on the activities of Janus Lascaris, Jean Grolier, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, and Giovanni Battista Grimaldi. Includes French and Swiss examples.
