Discusses chronology, formal evolution, and design sources for sculpted archivolts of early 12th c. portals (1100-1130), especially in relation to the west portal of S. Pierre, Aulnay-de-Saintonge (variously dated) and the proto-Gothic portal of the abbey church of S. Denis (shortly before 1140). Traces the diffusion of the radiating voussoir, indigenous to western France, and the roll archivolt, imported from northern Italy. Suggests a common background for Aulnay and S. Denis.
