Abstract
(en)
Criticizes aspects of Peter Brown's views on the rise and function of the cult of saints in Late Antiquity, particularly his use of iconography. Focuses on the painted (non-Christian) arcosolium in the catacomb of Vibia in Rome (after 356) and that in the catacomb of Domitilla, also in Rome (ca.360). Argues that Late Antique and Early Christian funerary iconography share a common pictorial language, as in both arcosolia the dead are led into Paradise by an "advocatus" figure.
