On hidden imagery in art and its significance; examples include a hidden self-portrait in Gauguin's Old Women of Arles, 1888 (Art Institute of Chicago) and a huge mask in the composition of Michelangelo's Last Judgment (Sistine Chapel, Vatican, Rome).
