Examines Abstract Expressionists' writings and statements explaining their attitudes, theories, and interpretations of specific paintings; analyzes major paintings by Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still; concludes that the artists' work is a reflection of the theory they held, and examines the ramifications of that notion.
