Abstract (en)
Discusses Millais's 1850-1851 painting (Makins collection) firstly, to show how it relates to works by Tennyson and Shakespeare; secondly, to show its significance in the evolution of the Pre-Raphaelite Gothic; and thirdly, to determine the cause of its popularity with Victorian women. Concludes the latter may be owing to Mariana's passive but provocative resistance to her embroidering, i.e. to the feminine situation.
