Discusses the significance of this gesture in Rossetti's watercolors and drawings 1853-1857, and in poetry written 1868-1869. Argues that, for Rossetti, the kiss is a form of metalanguage in which lovers abandon speech in order to communicate feelings of extraordinary intensity and value.
