Abstract (en)
Examines the forms of the Eucharist ritual, the sources of communion vessels, and the patterns discernible in the accumulation of sets of vessels by individual churches to uncover the underlying assumptions that governed Puritan attempts to reconcile the need for hierarchy and social order with the doctrine of God's free grace. Author accumulated data on 1044 vessels (made from various materials including silver, pewter, ceramics, glass and wood) from 125 churches in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
