Considers issues relating to the production of standardised consumer goods in large volumes--how design decisions were made and implemented, the relationship of those decisions to the organisation of the industries and markets concerned, the social shape of the market for consumer goods (England and North America). Suggests some of their implications for an understanding of 18th c. debates about design.
