On exegesis and the problem of the relationship of language to art as addressed in 17th c. France. Examines the three languages of painting: the langage allégorique, the langage mystérieux, and the langage direct; notes the reaffirmation of the doctrine of mimesis, combined with the Neo-platonic doctrine of the idea as the essence of art, in relation to the rhetoric of the passions; cites texts, mainly Félibien's Entretiens and critical responses to paintings.
