Questions the view of collage as symptomatic of a modernist break with the past, and sees it instead as exemplifying a change already under way within the traditional medium of oil painting. Citing Adrian Stokes, examines the underlying epistemology of the evolution from Cezanne's late style to the appearance of collage in the work of Braque and Picasso.
