Abstract (en)
Disagrees with the thesis that the description of an antique silver vase in Theodulf of Orléans ca.799 poem Contra iudices (Against Judges) refers to an actual work of ancient art. Argues it is more likely that Theodulf--while he may have seen some sort of Late Antique (2d-3d c.) silver repoussé vessel--instead drew upon several well-known literary sources for creating a program of images for his own purposes. Emphasizes the influence on Theodulf of S. Augustine's critique of the pagan Roman tradition in his De civitate Dei.
