Abstract (en)

On the Madonna della Clemenza, an encaustic icon of ca.705 in S. Maria in Trastevere, Rome. Notes that the gold cross shown in the enthroned Madonna's right hand is not part of the original painting. Argues that this image was added in tempera to take the place of a real cross of precious metal which was nailed or strapped to the icon on a level with the Virgin's hand.
