Abstract (en)
Considers the tendency in art historical literature to regard progressive works of art in Late Antiquity, i.e. works which did not simply perpetuate the Greco-Roman style, as representing a "decline of form" (a phrase coined by Berenson in 1954). Author here suggests a fundamentally different way of looking at the development of abstract styles in Late Antique art and their relation to Christianity.
