Abstract (en)

Argues that, owing to advanced technical capabilities for examining paintings, connoisseurship of drawings need not be solely dependent on stylistic comparisons with other drawings or with an artist's paintings. Outlines some ways in which the study of drawings and underdrawings together demonstrates their interrelationship and clarifies the form and function of each stage as part of the artist's working procedure.
