Abstract (en)
Presents and interprets results of technical analyses of the Feast of the Gods (National Gallery, Washington), painted by Giovanni Bellini in 1514 for the camerino d'alabastro of Alfonso d'Este in the Castello Estense, Ferrara, and partially repainted by Titian in 1529. On the basis of documentary and technical evidence, concludes that Bellini completed the picture, and that it was then altered twice, probably to suit the patron's taste. Reconstructs the first alteration, attributing it on grounds of style to Dosso Dossi, 1514-1519; and identifies in detail Titian's alterations.
