Examines Zuccari's alterations to the iconography of hell in V. Borghini's program for the decoration, begun by Vasari, of the cupola of S. Maria del Fiore, Florence. Interprets the four écorché terms in light of a passage from Dante's Inferno, canto XXVIII, as symbolizing the defense of the Catholic Church against Protestantism and Islam.
