Abstract (en)

Considers the mechanisms and implications of Constantinople's artistic hegemony in the Byzantine Empire. Suggests that art contributed to an ideology which mediated the inequality in exchange--political, religious, economic and cultural--between the capital and the provinces. As an example, discusses the assimilation into local cult practice of an imported image, specifically some 10th and 11th c. images of the Virgin Eleousa.
