Abstract (en)
Proposes a method of establishing the identity of a workshop through the analysis of the ornament that it uses. Reports on the application of this method to some 80,000 ornament samples drawn from frescoes in 11th c. Cappadocian churches. Concludes that, by the 11th c., Cappadocia appears to have developed its own traditions of ecclesiastical mural decoration but, where patronage permitted, freelance artists or even whole workshops were imported from outside the region.
